Royal Navy Submariner and “Countdown” Champion Tomas “Butters” Stevenson Died in Apparent Suicide at 24

Family, friends, and colleagues are mourning the tragic loss of Tomas “Butters” Stevenson, a Royal Navy submariner and recent television champion, who died at the age of 24 in what his family described as an unfortunate inccident.

Stevenson, who had recently been crowned the winner of the 86th series of the popular UK television quiz show Countdown just before Christmas, was remembered as a bright, dedicated, and deeply valued member of both the military and wider community.

Serving as a Leading Catering Services (LCS) specialist, Stevenson proudly served in the Royal Navy aboard several submarines, including HMS Trenchant, HMS Talent, and HMS Triumph, as well as at RMB Chivenor. His service was marked by professionalism, camaraderie, and a strong sense of duty.

In a heartfelt statement shared with the family’s permission, it was announced: “It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we announce Leading Catering Services (LCS) Tomas ‘Butters’ Stevenson sadly passed on 3 January 2026.”

Beyond his naval career, Stevenson gained national recognition through his appearance on Countdown, where his intelligence, quick thinking, and humility won him admiration from viewers across the country.

Those who knew him describe a young man full of life, humor, and kindness—someone who formed strong friendships and brought energy wherever he went. His nickname, “Butters,” reflected the warmth and personality that made him so well loved among his peers.

Funeral arrangements have been announced as follows:

  • Date: Thursday, 12 February 2026
  • Time: 10:00 a.m.
  • Service Location: Lelley Fields Crematorium (Sproatley Road, HU12 8GX)
  • Wake Location: Pitch 21, Sproatley Road, Sproatley, HU12 8TU

The family has requested that attendees wear loud, colorful shirts in celebration of Tomas’s life and personality.

The service will be available via video link for those unable to attend in person, with details to be shared closer to the date. Service personnel wishing to attend have been asked to make prior contact with organizers.

Stevenson’s passing has left a deep void among his family, fellow servicemen and women, and all who followed his journey—from beneath the sea to television screens across the nation. Thomas was nfound dead in what is being described as suicide following a battle with mental illness and depressipn.

He will be remembered not only for his achievements, but for his character, his laughter, and the lasting impact he made in his short but meaningful life.
